But two weeks ago, a British newspaper reported that, before her death, Andrews planned to point out similarities between her memoir and the novel. McEwan acknowledged Andrews's memoir in his own novel, and has thanked her publicly. This last detail, common to both books, is central to the current brouhaha. McEwan drew upon her memoir for his much-loved 2001 novel,Ītonement: His character Briony, like Lucilla, nursed wounded soldiers, and, like her real-life counterpart, daubed gentian violet on them to cure ringworm. Andrews, who specialized in medical love stories, was a nurse in a London hospital during the Second World War, an experience she recounted in her memoir, On one side is Lucilla Andrews, at one time quite a famous romance author, who died in October at the age of 86. This is relevant because McEwan has recently found himself in the crossfire of a particularly literary bun fight. McEwan did the research, took the advice, and then went away and made it into art. ![]()
